How to record a podcast with Podcast in a Box
Set up the included audio hardware, position compatible iPhones as camera angles, and run the recording from a host iPhone or iPad. After recording, bring the feeds together, review the multicamera edit, and export the result.
1 Set up a room for conversation
Choose a quiet space and a stable table. Give both speakers enough room to sit comfortably and reach their microphones. Listen for fans, traffic and appliances before you begin. Position your lighting so the speakers' faces are easy to see.
2 Connect the microphones
Place one dynamic microphone in front of each speaker and connect both to the audio interface using the included cables. Connect the interface to the supported host device. Make a short test recording with both people speaking at their normal volume and listen back before the full conversation.
3 Place your camera phones
Mount compatible iPhones and choose your framing. You might want a view of each person and a wider view of the table, depending on your supported configuration and available devices. Keep phones steady and leave room around the speakers so normal movement stays in frame.
Check the supported device setup
4 Record the session
Use the host device to control the session. Camera devices record locally. Check battery levels and available internal storage before recording, and keep the devices in the supported connection setup throughout the session.
5 Bring the recordings together
Transfer the camera recordings to the host workflow and bring the synchronized material into the editor. Keep the original recordings until you have checked the final export and made a backup.
6 Review your camera edit
Use Automatic Multicam for a first cut based on who is speaking. Watch the result and make manual camera choices where needed. Review transitions, the beginning and end, and sections where speakers overlap.
7 Export and publish separately
Export the finished recording. The current workflow also lets you export audio from a recorded video session. Upload the appropriate exported file through your chosen podcast host or video platform; PIAB's recording workflow does not replace those publishing accounts.
Before every full episode
- Check each device and connection.
- Check internal storage and battery levels.
- Record both speakers talking normally.
- Listen to the test and check every camera angle.
- Confirm that the test transfers, edits and exports as expected.
- Keep the originals until the final file and backup are verified.
