How to take a podcast setup on location
A portable podcast setup needs more than equipment that fits in a case. Before you leave, check the location, power, device storage and recording workflow. Pack the items needed to repeat a setup you have already tested.
Ask about the room before you arrive
Find out where the conversation will happen, how much table space you have and whether there are nearby outlets. Ask about background music, air conditioning and interruptions. A room that looks good in photos may sound poor when people begin talking.
If possible, choose a quieter space with softer furnishings. Confirm that you are allowed to record there and that the participants understand how the recording will be used.
Pack by function
- Audio: microphones, their cables, interface and supported connection cable.
- Positioning: microphone stands, device mounts and any required tripods.
- Devices: supported host and camera phones with the needed software.
- Power: charged devices and the power equipment for your tested setup.
- Checking: headphones for test playback.
- Optional room improvements: suitable lights and any practical sound treatment.
- Backup: a plan to preserve the originals and copy the finished files.
Keep a written packing list inside the case. Check it when leaving the location as well as before you travel.
Check storage before leaving
Free internal space on every recording device and allow room on the host for transfer and export. Do not assume a cloud subscription means there is enough local space to record. The current PIAB workflow records locally rather than directly to external USB-C storage.
Leave time for a complete test
Set up the people, microphones and camera views as they will appear in the episode. Record a short sample and play it back. Listen for noise that was not obvious when the room was empty, and check that normal movements stay in frame.
Use the same device and network arrangement that your recording workflow supports. Do not assume a venue's guest Wi-Fi or an untested hotspot will work. Resolve the connection arrangement before bringing everyone to the table.
Keep the setup repeatable
Photograph the arrangement and note the device roles so you can rebuild it next time. Keep cable routing out of walkways. At the end, verify that the recordings are preserved before disassembling or clearing storage.
Podcast in a Box keeps its core audio hardware, stands, mounting equipment and cables together in a hard-sided case. It is designed for an in-person iPhone/iPad workflow. Explore the kit and check compatibility before planning a recording that depends on it.
