What does it cost to start a podcast

Your podcast startup cost depends on what you already own and the kind of show you want to record. Separate the cost of recording equipment from devices, accessories, publishing services and your time. A kit price is one line in the budget, not necessarily the total.

Start with what you already have

List usable phones or cameras, microphones, headphones, a suitable room, lights and a computer or editing device. Check compatibility before treating an existing item as a saving. A phone that works well for everyday video may not be supported in your chosen multicamera app.

Decide whether the show is audio or video, how many people will speak, and whether they will be together or remote. These decisions change the equipment and software you need.

Total initial cash cost equals new equipment plus any required devices, accessories, shipping and tax. Ongoing cash cost equals recurring services, subscriptions and any paid production help. Keep those two totals separate.

Where Podcast in a Box fits

Planned retail $649. See Kickstarter for current reward pricing and availability. Shipping, taxes and campaign terms apply.

The base kit includes two microphones, an interface, stands, mounts, cables and a case. Kickstarter backers receive lifetime founding member app access under the campaign terms.

Compatible phones or tablets are not included. Headphones, additional lighting, publishing services, shipping and tax may also affect your total. Check the live reward and its terms before calculating a final budget.

Compare like for like

When comparing a kit with separate purchases, include the same jobs on both sides. If one option includes stands and cables while the other does not, add those costs. If one workflow requires recurring software, include that over the period you expect to use it. Do not compare an audio-only bundle directly with a video workflow without accounting for the difference.

Spend in the order your pilot justifies

Record a short sample before buying optional upgrades. Find the problem that affects the episode most: unclear sound, poor lighting, unstable framing or an editing workflow you cannot complete. Address that problem, then test again.

A smaller setup you use consistently can be a better starting point than a larger one you struggle to run. Use the kit-versus-separate-equipment guide to make the tradeoff explicit.
